Jawaid Sharing his Viva Examination Journey

First of all, we would like to congratulate Mr. Jawaid for passing his Ph.D VIVA smoothly. He managed to do within 2 hours. I have asked his favour to share some of his experiences during VIVA and he agreed. Followings are his sharing. Hope we get some beneficial information from it.

(Experience of a PhD student during viva)

Q:    Is it difficult to present your work before examiners?
A:    Probably not, it is more like a slide show and technical discussion.

Q:    Does examiners confuses the candidate with some tricky questions.
A:    Perhaps true, but most of the cases, they support candidate to elucidate his/her work properly.

Q:    What are the most influencing items that need to take into account before viva?
A:
a.    Write very clear objectives in the statement of objectives.
b.    Accomplish all of the objectives during yours experimental/simulation study.
c.    Give a clear answer to the QUESTION that why you need to carry research on your topic of interest?
d.    Organize your thesis according to the accomplishment of your objectives. Probably, each chapter would comprise of 1-2 objectives in chronically order.
e.    Devise a clear research methodology to achieve each objective individually.
f.    Conclusion should be based on yours objectives not on yours work.
g.    Proof read your thesis at more than one time before submitting thesis.

Q:    What are the most influencing items that need to take into account during viva?
A:
a)    What were the reasons that you decided to work on this topic.
b)    How have you met all of the objectives?
c)    Do you believed you have achieved the goal? What is your major achievement ?
d)    Read thesis 2-3 times before viva, you will be able to answers effectively.
e)    Read your slides before viva as well.

Point to be noted

•    Clearly define your topic and reasons why you did this work.
•    Clearly define objectives
•    Clearly mention conclusions according to the objectives

Last Friday, one of our CREG members, Yani, defended her masters research project. The VIVA was examined by Prof. Dr. Abdul Rahman from USM and also Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ramli Mat from Faculty of Chemical Engineering, UTM. The VIVA which commenced at 9am ended at 11.30am and Yani officially passed her masters degree with minor correction.

Well done!!!

CREG’s New Research Officer

I hope it’s not too late to wish all of you a very happy and prosperous new year.

Good bye Mr. Haw, Thanks for your Contribution

Recently, our research officer, Mr. Haw, has left CREG to further his study. According to Mr. Haw, he will be doing hhis Ph.D somewhere in Europe. Unfortunately, I don’t have further details on the topic or location of his new university. Mr. Haw has been with CREG for about 3 months and he has contributed quite a lot to the group. Personally he has taught me several things related to chemistry, especially how to use the software to create chemical structures, which we, engineers are not used to.

New Replacement, New Energy

Mr. Haw’s position has been taken over by Yani, a CREG member who has joined since her undergraduate project. Now Yani is waiting to defense her Master’s thesis. Being with CREG for 2 seasons, she has vast experience on various research and management aspect in CREG. She’ll be around us, assisting Prof. Nor Aishah and the other CREG group member.

Visit by Former CREG student, Dr. Istadi from Universiti Diponogoro (UNDIP), Indonesia

Dr. Istadi paid a short but fruitful visit on the 4th of November 2010. Dr. Istadi was a Ph.D student with CREG from 2002 to 2006 and has produced a total of 9 refereed journal within that time. It was really good to have Dr. Istadi around, even for a short time. We hope CREG can collaborate with Dr. Istadi soon in future.

Photos will be uploaded soon.

CREG’s New Research Officer

The Chemical Reaction Engineering Group (CREG) has just received a new research officer, Mr. Haw Kok Giap.

He is actually a chemist who graduated from Chemistry Department, Faculty Science in 2008. He then pursued his study at Masters Degree level in chemistry field (full time by research) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and specialized in inorganic heterogeneous chemistry.

Presently, all CREG members are from chemical engineering background. With Mr. Haw around, providing chemistry input into the analytical research work, it will surely provide us with better discussion and analysis. Well, that is what we are aiming for.

Mr. Haw Masters degree titled is “Catalytic oxidative desulfurization of diesel utilizing peroxides, activated carbon and supported transition metals doped Molybdena“. He managed to published his research work in Fuel Processing Technology recently. Details of the publication is as shown below:

Kok-Giap Haw, Wan Azelee Wan Abu Bakar, Rusmidah Ali, Jiunn-Fat Chong, Abdul Aziz Abdul Kadir. 2010. Catalytic oxidative desulfurization of diesel utilizing hydrogen peroxide and functionalized-activated carbon in a biphasic diesel-acetonitrile system. Fuel Processing Technology. 91 (9), 1105-1112. Elsevier. Impact Factor: 2.321.

Mr. Haw first degree research title was: Oxidative desulfurization of diesel fuel with hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by activated carbon and organic acid.

If you are interested to contact Mr. Haw, you can email him at: hawkokgiap[alias]yahoo.com.
