REACTORS

High Pressure Fixed Bed differential Reactor

This unit designed for operating at high temperature up to 1000^oC using halogen heaters and at high pressure (0-55 bar) to carry out different chemical reactions using different types of synthesised and commercial catalysts; catalytic naphtha reforming via different feed stocks (model compounds and complex mixtures of wide boiling range), hydro-treating reactions of middle distillates (HDS, HDN, HDM and HDO) and hydro-cracking of light and heavy vacuum gas oils. It is applicable to measure the following activities:

· Measurement of chemical performances of solid catalysts activity, selectivity, thermal stability, working life,

· Comparison of performances between various catalysts,

· Quantitative determination of the influence of operating parameters in term of conversion ratio and reaction yields: total pressure, partial pressure, reaction speed, residence time, and temperature,

· Optimization and improvement of refining and petrochemical processes.

Plasma Reactor

Plasma reactors has a vast varieties application in chemical- physical reactions like ozone generation, fluorescent tubes, neon signs, combustion improvement and dry ore-separation units. A furnace with the capability of supplying high temperature, significantly of high frequency and voltage sensitivity is supplied.

Pyrolysis Rig

The rig is used to conduct catalytic cracking of empty palm fruit bunch (EPFB). The rig is equipped with a semi batch reactor and connected to a condenser. The resulting organic liquid products are collected in a round-bottomed flask while gas sampling port is used to accumulate gaseous product.

Gas Chromatography – Mass Selectivity (GC-MS)

GC-MS is important to analyze and identify the compound exist in organic liquid product (OLP). The GC-MS is equipped with capillary column (30m long x 250µm ID x 0.5µm film thickness) and mass selective detector (MSD). Chemstation software is used to control the programmer sequence of sample injection and to integrate the peak areas of GC-MS.

Gas Chromatography-Thermal Conductivity Detector (GC-TCD)

GC-TCD (GCTCD Agilent 6890) is used to analyze gaseous products. This equipment is equipped with packed column, Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD), and capillary column. Inert Helium gas at the flowrate of 10ml/min and TCD with front detector temperature of 473K was applied to operate GC.

Furnace

Furnace is a device used for heating. The Box Furnace (Carbolite) available in CREG lab can reach up to 1200^oC while the Tube Furnace (Carbolite) is 1100^oC.

Oven

Oven (Memert ULE 500) is used for heating and drying lab materials such as glassware, tubing and samples.

Fume Hood

CREG has 2 units of fume hood in lab. It is important to avoid person’s exposure to hazardous and/or unpleasant fumes such as highly acidic or alkaline solution.

Orbital Shaker

Orbital shaker is used to homogenize samples and allow the reaction of samples to be occured.

UV-Spectrophotometer

It is a photometer (a device for measuring light intensity) that can measure intensity as a function of the color, or more specifically, the wavelength of light. In CREG lab, Uv-Spectrophotometer used to measure the Kappa Number of EPFB in order to evaluate the lignin content of the sampl. Besides, it also being used for enzyme-related research.

Water Distiller

It is used to produce distill water for research purpose

Cooling Bath

Being used in condensation system of pyrolysis reaction. CREG has 3 units of cooling bath.

Hot Plate Stirrer

Hot plate stirrer can be used to mix samples or heating up the sample or when simultaneous sample’ mixing and heating is needed.

Analytical Balance/Micro Balance

Balance is an instrument that’s used to measure mass. CREG lab’s balance (AND GF-3000) can weigh sample ranging from 0.5g – 3100 g while the analytical balance (Precisa XT 220A) precisely weighs 0.01 g – 220 g sample.
